» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Breach of Trust

Good blog post. What this pastor did was indeed a serious breach of trust. He will likely be brought to justice, however, both in this life - and the next. I hope that, sometime before that "next life," he confesses his wrongdoing.

In the meantime, though, as I'm sure you know (but some of your readers may not), there are a lot of honest, hard-working pastors out there who do their best to use the money collected in their churches for good and noble purposes.

It's kind of like plane crashes. We hear all about the crashes, but not many news reports on the hundreds of safe and uneventful flights each day. Likewise, we hear all about the clergy scandals - but little (nothing) about the preachers and pastors that are faithfully and honestly going about the Lord's business.

You're right of course. I'm going to try to write about at least one good program a month. I just posted one on a course you might have heard about - Alpha.

I was just so upset when I read it. My parish discloses all of its financials all the time and it's very easy to see where the money goes. We raised 40,000 at our Christmas fair and were able to give Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and presents to 500 families. I can't help but think about all the families in need that money he stole could have helped.

We have monthly business meetings at our church, in which we provide to every member present a written report of ALL expenditures - every single check (how much, to whom it was written, etc) documented. There are no secrets - including how much they pay me as the pastor. My salary is out there for everyone to see. But, as uncomfortable as that might be, it's good accountability.

I agree. I know not everyone takes a vow of poverty but it makes me uneasy when I see religious getting wealthy. It also may help some people understand that you chose this work out of love. I'm assuming it's pretty obvious from your disclosure that you don't have gold place settings at the dinner table.

I wonder... how many other pastor's embezzle or misappropriate, but their church boards don't disclose it, and don't prosecute so as not to embarrass their church.

Call me cynical but I think any activity you find in the general public you could find in organized religion - hopefully to a lesser degree. Although believers strive for the best behavior, we are all human and subject to falling and failing.

If you can hear my laughter, then you'll have a pretty good idea how safe your assumption is. happy
