» jcredmond - ...of the Catholic Church?

Well, I married a Roman Catholic. I think that the Church has a purpose for those that are members of that particular faith but it's not the right faith for me. I'm a Protestant and even though I've attended services in the Catholic Church many times it leaves me empty, if that makes any sense.

A common complaint even among Catholics, Jodee. Hence, I'm an X-Catholic.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - My take

You and I should have a great ongoing interplay, since I'm the Protestantism editor. :-)

First, my in-laws are Catholic, and my wife grew up Catholic. I have respect for the Catholic Church, and I agree with much of what the Catholic Church teaches.

That said, I strongly disagree with the underlying premise of apostolic succession - namely, the idea that the apostles' successors are qualified to declare new spiritual and theological revelations. It is through this doctrine that the Catholic Church has added much to the original Scriptures and has elevated its teachings (known also as Sacred Tradition) to the same level as the Bible. And, of course, the Church also added to the Bible, incorporating books the early church did not.

So, there you have it in a nutshell.

» Purplesunset - I am glad to hear what you think

I am glad to hear what everyone thinks about the catholic church. I am not catholic, no where near, but I believe studying the roots of christianity provides everyone with a foundation of where they came from? Do you think it provides a foundation?

This is interesting. I have always wondered what the diffences are between Catholicism and Protestantism. I recall from school history that Martin Luther had a disgreement with the Pope over some prevalent practices which led to the separation. But I was not aware that fundamental issues were involved.
