In response to I am glad to hear what you think posted by Purplesunset:
Since several denominations broke off from the Old Church, it certainly is valuable to examine the Catholic Church, then and now.

» Feature Writer Laurie Pawlik-Kienlen - ...of the Catholic Church?

In response to ...of the Catholic Church? posted by Migisi:

My hubby waas raised in a Catholic home, and I find their services ritualistic and exclusionary. We married in his Catholic church, and I didn't really care one way or another as long it was a Godly ceremony, but we now attend a Community Church.
-
I, too, find that the Catholic services leave me empty -- but I think the ritualism comforts people. The rules and traditions rovide structure, which may make people feel secure.

» pink101 - Interesting

.
What some of us find "interesting" is how, after generations of distrust and hatred between Catholics and Protestants, they were brought together by the politics of the Silent Majority in America.
.
Basically, they're more alike than they are different.

I was a Cradle Catholic too - raised by devout tithing parents. Back in the day, Mass was said and sung in Latin - with the priest's back to us. All women and girls were required to wear dresses and head coverings (just to give you a timeline).
.
As a parochial school student, I attended Mass every day with my class (confession on Friday), and then Sunday Mass with my parents. We used missals to follow along - reading and reciting the responses and prayers, and singing the hymn selected for that day.
.
Mass was much like watching a foreign movie and reading subtitles. Imagine seeing the same movie six times a week for years! You know it all by heart - no reading required. Mass was nothing more than a mandatory rote exercise - like daily tooth brushing.
.
Sure, religious tradition is comfortable and secure -- and boring. If that's what folks want from their religion, more power to em.

As far as the service for communion goes, the Anglican and Catholic Churches are very similar. I don't think a lot of people realize that.

In response to Judge Not posted by HeadZenCards:
Certainly the whole issue of sexual abuse is a topic that would likely warrant its own discussion, as would the Church's views with regard to sexuality. Recently, I was checking out my MIL's misssal and it had a section about church doctrines in it. One of the things mentioned is that masturbation is a sin. I would think that if God is going to send people to hell for doing that, the place would be packed! I just have to shake my head at that kind of material.

There is a lot of interesting subjects surrounding the church, such as the sex abuse. I am seeing the general pattern not a lot of people are fans of catholicism.

In response to Interesting Subjects posted by Purplesunset:
There are certainly people who go to this Church and support it, financially and spiritually. Maybe a good topic for a future article would be to interview someone who is a member and see how they come to terms with the issues surrounding it, like the sexual abuse. Or if they come to terms with it...maybe their faith is such that they don't question things.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Anglicans & Catholics

In response to Interesting posted by jcredmond:

The Anglican Church wouldn't be separate from Catholicism were it not for Henry VIII wanting a divorce. Of course, other differences have emerged since then, but they are still far more alike than they are different.
