When children are in new situations, or experiencing times of difficulty, a parent's prayer can be a very supportive and powerful tool in moving through the transition. Significant truths can be spoken within a blessing that may otherwise not be heard or understood by the child. In addition, the parent has the power of God behind the words! How's that for support!
A Blessing for Children of All Ages
The following is a blessing loosely modeled after the Rite of Acceptance blessing over those who are seeking to become baptized in the Catholic Church. A sign of the cross can be traced gently on the eyes, ears, lips, heart, shoulders and forehead as the blessing is offered.
- "God bless your eyes: May you see what is beautiful in the world, in others and in yourself."
- "God bless your ears: May you truly listen to the needs of others and to God's plan for your life."
- "God bless your mouth: May your words be kind and may you always speak truth."
- "God bless your heart: May you offer love generously and receive it easily from others."
- "God bless your shoulders: May they bear your burdens well and may you be unafraid to ask for help along the way."
- "God bless your mind: May you always believe you are dearly loved by God no matter what challenges life may bring or what doubts may arise."
- "You are precious in God's eyes. Always, you are blessed! Amen."
Prayer Brings Healing
No matter what mistakes parents may make along the way, children and parents are connected at a soul level. The parent's blessing is profoundly heard in the heart and mind of God. This blessing can be offered even when the child is not present.
In situations where the parent and child are in a power struggle, are not speaking or possibly estranged from one another altogether, praying for the child is a healing act for the recipient and parent alike. In this moment the parent remembers his or her deepest desires for the child. The act of praying also reminds religious parents that they are not alone.
The Sign of the Cross
It is appropriate for parents to make the sign of the cross on a child's forehead as they head off for school or other activities. This non-verbal sign reminds children that Jesus is always with them and that they are protected and loved. It is a significant witness for parents to allow the children to bless them in this manner as well. The act of signing a parent or sibling head teaches the children that they are called to be people of prayer and allows all family members to begin a wonderful life-long habit.
